A spy pen is a functioning ink pen that also has a video camera above the pocket clip. The operator of the spy pen records video with the pen clicker button. The video can be accessed via a computer. The spy pen is a great covert tool; however, there are some disadvantages to using a spy pen.
The Spy Pen Camera
The camera lens on a spy pen is located directly above the pocket clip.
Saving a Pen Camera Video
Typically, recording and saving a video file on a spy pen is easy. The clicker button that usually opens the writing tip will be the recording on/ off button.
Click the button and the spy pen starts recording. Click the button again and the spy pen stops recording, saving the video as a video file.
If you want to know if you are recording and saving video files correctly, the spy pen will let you know. On the backside of the pen will be a recording light.
The spy pen can have internal memory for saving video or use an SD card via an SD card slot in the spy pen.
To view the video, plug the spy pen in a computer using a USB cable and you'll be good to go.
Why Use a Spy Pen: Advantages
The biggest advantage for using a spy pen is the recording height:
It is weird looking to hold a covert recording device five feet up with your hand.
A spy pen sits naturally in a pocket at that height, which is great for recording head on.
This is done by keeping the pen in your front pocket. You can secure the spy pen and prevent it from moving too much by clipping it in your pocket with a plastic card.
Keep the spy pen among other pens to help disguise it.
The Functioning Ink Pen Camera
The use the spy pen as a regular writing ink pen, just twist the tip.
Spy pens will usually have replaceable ink cartridges.
The Disadvantages of a Spy Camera
There are two main problems with using a spy camera:
The spy pen is big and luxurious looking.
You cannot move the pen around without moving your torso.
